Skincare in a humid climate: what Florida changes

Skincare advice is mostly written for temperate climates, and it does not survive a Florida August. Here the air outside is wet, the air inside is dry, and most people cross that boundary ten times a day. That alone changes what your skin needs.

What humidity actually does

Humid air slows down water loss from the skin, which sounds good and mostly is. But it also means heavier creams sit on the surface instead of absorbing, sweat mixes with sunscreen and makeup, and anything occlusive feels suffocating by noon.

Then you step into air conditioning, which is aggressively dry, and the skin loses water faster than it did outside. That swing — not the heat itself — is what leaves people here both shiny and tight.

What to change

  • Lighter textures, same steps. Gel or lotion instead of cream. Do not drop the moisturiser — that is the mistake that starts the oil cycle.
  • Humectants over occlusives. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid work well in humid air; thick balms rarely do.
  • Sunscreen you will actually reapply. A stick or powder in the bag beats a perfect sunscreen applied once at 7am. UV here is high year-round, not seasonal.
  • Mineral, tinted, if you have pigmentation. It blocks visible light, which matters more here than in most places.
  • Rinse after the beach or pool. Salt and chlorine left on the skin for hours are a common cause of the “sudden sensitivity” people blame on a new product.

Sweat, heat and breakouts

Small itchy bumps on the forehead, chest and back in summer are often not acne but heat-related blockage — treating them with acne products makes them worse. Rinse after sweating, avoid heavy occlusive layers in the heat, and do not scrub.

Melasma also reacts to heat, not only to light. If your patches worsen in summer despite diligent sunscreen, the stove, the car and hot yoga are part of the picture.

Two seasons, two routines

Most people here need a lighter routine from roughly May to October and a slightly richer one for the rest of the year — the dry season plus constant air conditioning is when skin here actually gets dehydrated. Changing two products, not the whole shelf, is enough.
