Most of what people squeeze out of their nose is not a blackhead. It is a sebaceous filament, it is supposed to be there, it comes back in about thirty days, and the squeezing is what turns a normal pore into a permanently wider one.

Filament or blackhead
- Sebaceous filaments — grey or light tan, uniform, many of them, mostly on the nose and inner cheeks. They are the pore’s normal lining of sebum doing its job. Everyone has them. They cannot be removed permanently.
- Blackheads — genuinely dark, raised enough to feel, scattered rather than uniform, often on the chin and forehead. These are blocked pores, and the dark colour is oxidised sebum, not dirt.

The practical difference: filaments are managed, blackheads are cleared. Chasing filaments with the treatment for blackheads is how people end up with irritated, larger-looking pores and no improvement.
What actually works
- Salicylic acid, two or three times a week. Oil-soluble, so it works down inside the pore. This is the single most effective thing on the list.
- A retinoid at night. It speeds up turnover inside the pore lining, which prevents the blockage forming in the first place. Slower than salicylic but more lasting.
- Niacinamide daily to reduce sebum and keep pores clear between treatments.
- A light moisturiser. Dehydrated skin produces more oil, and more oil means more blockage.
- Professional extraction if something is genuinely stuck — done after softening the skin, with the right tool, by someone who can see what they are doing.

Expect six to eight weeks. Pores empty gradually, and the improvement is visible in how skin catches the light before it is visible up close in a mirror.
What makes it worse

- Squeezing. It stretches the pore wall and can rupture it under the surface, which turns a blackhead into an inflamed spot and, over time, into a scar.
- Pore strips. They pull out the top of the filament and take some barrier with it. The filament refills; the pore stays stretched.
- Steam and hot water as preparation at home. Softening without a safe way to extract just leaves skin inflamed.
- Scrubs. They abrade the surface and never reach the inside of a pore, which is where the problem is.
The honest part: you will not get to zero. A nose with no visible pore texture at all belongs to photo retouching, not to skin. What you can reach is pores that are clear, calm and not getting wider — and that is a result that holds, which the squeezing version never does.
